10 Families of Brick Kiln Workers Released from Bondage

Yesterday 10 families  of brick kiln workers comprising on 49  persons including women children and elderly got freedom from slavery with the assistance of Bonded Labor Liberation Front Pakistan from illegal detention of malik Imran owner of brick kiln No 7 area of Police Chocki Jia bagga Police Station Raiwind Lahore.

The brick kiln owner was used to take forced labor against unlivable wages and use coercive measures including torture and humiliation of women, implication of brick kiln workers in false criminal cases against workers who ask for better working conditions or increase in wages. These workers were forced to live in inhuman living conditions.
After issuance of " The Punjab Prohibition of child labor at brick kilns ordinance 2016". The said slave master tighten the screws of the workers, increased deductions from wages, reduced rate of wages as decrease in production due to registration of the children in schools. The employer Malik Imran was used to compel parents to engage their children in work during night.
At last Mukhar Ahmad along with more than 23 family heads made applications to concerned authorities for implementation of minimum wage award; social security, electricity at huts, clean drinking water and toilets for women. But no perper action was taken yet.
On 30th April a journalist of TV channel visited this brick kiln and found children were working there. the brick kiln owner made strict resistance and tried to stop him from shooting. However, the TV team succeeded to shoot and interview the laborers.During interview a child told , our parents are forced by owners to engage us in work
 The brick kiln owner beat children and workers badly after getting back of the TV Channel.  Even he restricted to most of the workers from participation in labor day rally.
During mid night of 3rd and 4th April 2016  Mukhtar Ahmad aged brick kiln workers was sleeping in his hut along with his wife and four young daughters when all of sudden four to five persons with out any uniform climbed his walls and dragged him outside where police vehicle along with police men were present. they threw him in police van and went away. At the occasion  clerk of the employers satire at Mukhtar  and  said ironically " you are going for life imprisonment in robbery and arms case" said Fatima to get you release.
Immediate after arrest Syeda Ghulam Fatima made lobby approached police chocky and informed the concerned in-charge about the actual situation. The chock in charge showed apprehension of    again abduction of Mukhtar by the brick kiln owners therefore, he desired to handover him to Fatima. So she personally went to police chocki and got him in her custody. the next day Mukhtar along with his other fellow workers was presented before CCPO Lahore. The CCPO Lahore took Immediate strict action and called to both SP operation and SP investigation. after initial inquiry he terminated the responsible police official under the charge of false implication and illegal arrest of Mulhtar. Furthermore,  he issued directions for recovery of the families of applicants. Immediate after the directions of the CCPO Lahore, police guards were placed outside of huts of the workers for their protection and after 24 hours of negotiations with brick kiln owners, who tried to lobby and resist, workers were released. During the course of negociations with brick kiln owners the concerned DSP clearly informed them, workers are free, no one dare to stop them or force them for labor" its the law of land. This attitude of police officials was seen first time, Mukhtar said. There were large number of gunman were out side the police station to harass us and one time we were feared of abduction" . we informed to Fatima who contacted with SP Sadar and we were provided protection. Mukhtar got freedom after 12 yeas slavery.
This quick police action   is the first instance in the history of our struggle Syeda Ghulam Fatima.  A significant  flaw in  physical growth of adolescent girls was observed due to hard work since child hood.
However,in another case more than 100 brick kiln workers are pledged in illegal custody of brick kiln owner in district Kasur since 7th April. Police illegally arrested three applicant workers, kept them for three days at police station  and keep on pressurizing to with draw their applications from labor department. One aged person got heart attack during the harassment of the brick kiln owner. He is at verge of death. Whereas,  the pregnant women and children are growing sick.  The DPO Kasur pay no heed to made them release.
Conclusion police has pivotal  role in elimination of  bonded labor and child labor.
